What Katy, TX Industrial Epoxy Floor Coating Contractors Can Do for You

Epoxy floor coatings are one of the most popular types of flooring on the market today. They offer many benefits that make them ideal for commercial use, including durability, slip resistance, easy maintenance, and a variety of design options. They are also resistant to chemicals, oils, and stains.

What gives epoxy flooring its resistance and durability? In truth, epoxy is a type of thermoset plastic. Thermoset plastics are different from the stuff that forms your milk jugs and water bottles. Thermoset plastic is a type of plastic that is cured or hardened using heat or pressure. Once it has been cured, it cannot be melted or softened.

Like other thermoset plastics, epoxy will undergo a curing process that will render them irreversibly hard. This makes floors coated with epoxy damage-resistant, chemical-resistant, and ridiculously easy to clean and maintain. Because they can handle most anything life throws at them, they perform spectacularly in areas of high foot or machinery traffic.

How Are Epoxy Floor Coatings Installed?

A lot of customers are unfamiliar with how epoxy coatings are applied. They ask us how we do it, and we are always more than happy to explain.

Epoxy is made out of two parts: resin and a hardener.

In truth, installing epoxy floor coatings is a relatively simple process that anyone can do. In fact, there are even DIY kits available in Home Depot and Lowes for homeowners to renovate their garages! However, although this skill is easy to learn, it is very difficult to master, and the materials in DIY kits tend to be of worse quality than what the professionals use.

Epoxy Technology Coatings has the years of experience that enable us to best install your epoxy floor coatings. We take care to apply the coating very evenly and thoroughly so that your workers and machinery can perform at their best. Here is how we do it!

Step 1: Prepare the Concrete

The first step that needs to be completed is to prepare the underlying concrete surface. Epoxy needs to have a clean surface to adhere to; it cannot be damaged, contaminated, or unprepared. Our workers will need to remove any old sealants and coatings. We also need to clean off any grease, oils, and solvents staining the floor.

To do this, our Katy, TX industrial epoxy floor coating contractors will typically employ the help of an industrial grinder. Grinding down the concrete will make the floor smoother and open up pores that the epoxy can seep into, ensuring better adhesion. We will then vacuum any dust or debris produced and get to work mixing the epoxy.

Step 2: Priming the Floor

Epoxy is made by mixing epoxy resin and a hardener. They are sometimes known as Part A and Part B. While the epoxy in DIY kits is usually only 50% solids, the mixes that professionals use is 100% solids. This makes the resin thicker and more reliable.

Our crew will pour the primer out onto the prepared concrete surface and spread it out using rollers, squeegees, and brushes. We will ensure that this base layer is sufficiently thin and even, as it will serve as the foundation for all following layers of epoxy.

Step 3: Color Customization

This is the fun part! Epoxy Technology Coatings has a lot of color options for our epoxy floor coatings, and there is sure to be something that perfectly suits the look and style of your business. Whether you want a solid epoxy floor color or something more colorful and interesting, we have something for you.

Some of our other popular color options include:

If you choose a flake option, then our workers will scatter the vinyl flakes all over the floor, letting them scatter onto the floor in interesting patterns. Since these flakes will land randomly, each floor we install will have a unique, differing pattern.

The flakes don’t just serve a visual purpose. They also serve to increase the traction of the floor. Once the flakes are settled in, our workers will let the epoxy dry for about six to ten hours, allowing the flakes to properly adhere to the primer. When we resume work, we will sweep up the excess flakes to reuse in future projects.

Step 4: Sealing the Floor

The last step is to seal off the floor with a clear top coat. This will ensure that the flakes are locked in place and won’t chip off. The top coat will also add durability and longevity to the floor. Once the top coat is applied, the floor must be let to cure for about 24 to 36 hours. Until that time is up, you’ll need to avoid foot and vehicle traffic in the area.
